I am a midwife and have always noticed that women who practise hypnobirthing techniques seem to have quicker, calmer births, and if labour took an unexpected turn they seemed more able to cope with this. I have worked as both a community and hospital midwife and I have been privileged to be present at many homebirths and witness women using Natal Hypnotherapy™ in practice. You can read more about my career background here.
I used Natal Hypnotherapy™ to prepare for the birth of my first baby. Although things didn’t go according to plan I stayed in control, focused and calm. My second labour was more straightforward but I still used Natal Hypnotherapy™ and had the most amazing experience. I started to question what was different for me to a lot of new mums, many of whom find birth scary and painful.
This combination of personal and professional experience compelled me to train as a Natal Hypnotherapy™ Practitioner. I can provide group workshops or one-to-one sessions (couples or individuals) to prepare for birth by:
• using hypnobirthing techniques
• changing your perspective on birth
• educating you on the emotional and physical journey involved in birthing your baby.
My classes can help anyone who is preparing to give birth especially if you are:
• a first time mum worried about labour
• someone who has had a previous traumatic birth experience
• a birth partner wanting to do the best for your loved one.
Or maybe you feel confident already but are looking for ways to feel as prepared and positive as possible.
The birth stories section includes a selection of beautiful accounts of births involving the use of Natal Hypnotherapy™.

What is it? Natal Hypnotherapy™ is the practice of learning deep relaxation, breathing and visualisation techniques to achieve a more relaxed birth experience. This is facilitated by regularly practising hypnosis techniques using one or a selection of the Natal Hypnotherapy™ CDs or downloads and attending Natal Hypnotherapy™ Classes. Natal Hypnotherapy™ teaches the woman to trust in her body’s ability to instinctively give birth and provides the partner with all the practical skills he or she will need to support her on this amazing journey.

How is it different from hypnobirthing? Hypnosis for pregnancy is popularly described as hypnobirthing and Natal Hypnotherapy™ is the longest standing method of this in the UK. The whole approach was created by Maggie Howell in 2000. You can read how she started it all by clicking here. The techniques have been developed organically through her own experiences of using them for five births, through her work as a hypnotherapist and doula and her work with leading birth specialists including Ina May Gaskin, Sheila Kitzinger and Michel Odent. Natal Hypnotherapy™ does not require a change of language, or aim for a pain free birth. Instead it focuses on a calm and peaceful birth, however this is achieved. The classes will equip you with tools for working with your midwife and the medical team should you need them. You can benefit from Natal Hypnotherapy™ if you are planning a homebirth, hospital or birth centre birth or a planned caesarean section.
Does it work? The short answer to this is YES! Hypnosis is a natural state that we can all learn to enter at will. There is lots of research that shows hypnosis can be used to overcome habits and phobias, prepare for sporting events, manage stress as well as during birth.
